Winter Challenge Pre-Ride. 20th Dec 2009 - Dave RobinsonIt was cold and white on Sunday morning, but I had told myself the night before that I was definitely going on the pre-ride - whatever the weather.A big turnout of over 20 riders braved the elements and followed Graham for a gentle pace around this ears (OK next years) Winter Challenge route. There was a bit of waiting around at the start for late comers who tried to help out by trying to drive up Pear Tree hill. Too slippery unless you have four-wheel drive. Once that was sorted out we had a very scenic ride towards Gore Cross. Generally the snow/frost on the ground was quite forgiving if you slipped off the main ruts. But on occasions the hard crispy edges caught some riders out. A few technical dismounts were witnessed. Bruised egos mainly but there may have been some sore thighs needing a hot soak once home. After Imber village, the less hardy (or more wise) souls took a turn towards Bratton to check out the official short route - that was their explanation. Once we got to Warminster the roads were once again black and it felt quite strange leaving the white stuff behind. Not for long - a quick road through the army camp and then back on the downs for a fast descent to Upton Scudamore. Steep road climb back up, then passing the defunct cement chalk quarry back to familiar territory. Graham led us through the woods (where we managed to lose Phil!) and a short downhill section to finish. Not sure if this section is on the official route? In many ways the weather was ideal for winter riding. The sun was out and the wind wasn't that strong. No mud and it wasn't as slippery as it looked. The photographs attached were took by Phil Miles. Who else can ride on that far ahead take pictures and then get back to the front again. It sure ain't me! |
