The SPAM Blast Enduro
This event was originally run as one of the local village events for the celebration of the new Millennium in 2000. Still going years on, last year we put together an event built on the basis of a varied 25km lap route which took in the best of our home venue (Erlestoke Woods) with some excellent Single track (home of the famous 12 hour competitive event held in May – ‘The Erlestoke Twelve’), in addition to the usual fantastic climbs and descents, all on a mixture of dirt, chalk, grass and gravel tracks.
Inm 2013, Just under 100 riders set off at 11.00am on Sunday 15th September – small numbers in comparison to what this event has seen in the past, but those that missed it missed out on another excellent course (experienced riders claimed it was the best they’d ridden in some time) – the type now synonomous with the SPAMBiking events.
Our thanks go to the volunteer marshals, our timing ladies, the Dorothy House ladies who provide fantastic after ride cake (all profits to local hospice, Dorothy House), registration volunteers, Extreme Medics and Bertie Mafoons Bike Shop (Marlborough). Big thanks also to all the competitors for supporting the hard work of our voluntary events team.
Profits from this and other SPAMBIKING events are donated to local charities including the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Help For Heroes.
Don’t miss out in 2019 – Entries open in the Summer once the date has been confirmed.
This event, now highly regarded by Elite Riders and Grin-Seekers alike, is now in its fifth year and is just getting better. With a course that is over 50% fun single track, the event offers a challenging seven mile-lap which remains fast and flowing in nearly all-weather conditions.
Run in wooded areas on the edge of Salisbury Plain, the course is interspersed with some open tracks and grassy sections which give a brain-break in between the narrow sections where,at speed, roots and tree-trunks challenge the most-experienced riders and leave all abilities grinning as they emerge back at the start/finish area.
With professional chip timing (we have learnt from mistakes made last year!), a small and friendly race village, demos tents, yummy catering and sponsorship from CHARGE and TORQ – this is a tried and tested popular event which will keep you entertained whether you choose to ride solo for 12 hours (12 Midday til 12 Midnight), 6 hours (1pm-7pm), or just a few laps as part of a team, or a few more as part of a pair – this event is a great one for all!
Facilities include FREE overnight camping (Saturday night), toilets, water (limited supply in containers – please bring your own if you can), Field Kitchen and a Coffee Bar by “Claude the Butler” to keep you going in the small hours, professional chip timing and live results PLUS another SUPER PRIZE FUND supplied by CHARGE and their associated partners.
The SPAM Winter Challenge is one of the longest standing winter season enduro events in the MTB calendar. The event is run on hard pack, all weather trails of Salisbury Plain. In 2013 it took place on a cold, frosty morning which brought with it beautiful blue skies – lucky really considering the rain and gale force winds that we experienced either side of the challenge weekend.
Last year the event was back in its traditional slot between Christmas and New Year encouraging approximately 600 riders, from age 8 – 70, to come and work off their Christmas dinner!
More comments from riders and organisers can be seen on the SPAMBIKING Facebook page.
As always, the club would like to thank all those friends and members that helped set up the course, marshals on the day, those who tidied up and those that entered – thank you to everyone!
Finally the tea and cake ladies representing Dorothy House raised £647 for the local hospice charity. They too would like to thank everyone for their support.
Stay posted for details of the 2019 event – date to be confirmed.
